About Lime (calcium carbonate not a green πŸ‹πŸ˜‰) Plaster Lime plaster is a treasure. If a house is plastered this way it will last hundreds of years and lime is very hygenic.

In contrast, if drywall gets wet once it becomes moldy and needs to be replaced. Drywall thus 1. replaces skilled laborers with technicians 2. Gives money to large corporations. 3. Replaces materials with immense longevity with inferior materials 4. Takes money out of our neighborhoods.

Repairing Lime Plaster is tricky but not hard. It requires patience, some skill and developing hand skills. There are commercially available products that are simple to use that will do a good job of repairing, not replacing old school plaster. The recipe for old school lime plaster is basically 3-1 similar to other masonry formulas. The base coat is 3 parts sharp and larger sand to 1 part lime. For the first coat, where you are pushing the plaster into the lathe it is helpful to add hair or something to keep it from just blobbing through the holes. The second coat is the basic recipe and the final coat increases the lime, decreases the sand and uses fine sand.
